What is BookGroup?
What is BookGroup?
BookGroup is a group reading platform. You read EPUB books in the integrated reader, create annotations and highlights on specific passages, participate in text-anchored discussions, and connect with other readers organized into groups by language or topic.
What are the main features?
• EPUB reader with chapter navigation, table of contents (ToC), paginated and continuous scroll modes.
• Annotations and highlights: select any passage to create a personal note or share with the group.
• Public or private reading groups, with subgroups for specific debates.
• Personal tags to organize your library by theme, genre, or any criteria.
• Language segmentation: groups and books can be filtered by language.
• Public library with a browsable, filterable EPUB catalog.
Does BookGroup have paid plans?
Currently, the platform operates in its initial phase without active subscription plans. All participants have full access to reading, annotation, discussion, and subgroup creation features. Premium plans — which will allow creating root groups and publishing books — are planned for the next phase.
Is BookGroup free?
Yes. Joining groups, reading EPUBs, making annotations, and creating subgroups is completely free. The available book catalog is curated and published by the BookGroup team. Subscription plans with additional features — such as group creation and book publishing — will be launched soon.
How to join the platform
How do I create my account?
There are two ways to join BookGroup:
• Invite link — receive a link from a member and join the group directly.
• No invite — access the platform with your email; if no spot is available yet, the system automatically manages your place in the queue and notifies you when one opens.
How does login work? Is there a password?
BookGroup uses passwordless authentication. Enter your email, receive a one-time access code (OTP) by email, and enter it to sign in. Fast and secure — no passwords to remember.
What is the waitlist?
When no invite is available, BookGroup automatically places you in the access queue. You don't need to do anything extra: just try signing in with your email and wait for a notification when a spot opens.
I received an invite link. What do I do?
Click the link. The system validates your invite token automatically. If you don't have an account yet, you'll be guided through creating one. After that, you join the group automatically.
What is identity validation?
On your first access, we ask for your date of birth and location. This is required for compliance with age rating and copyright laws in each country — protecting both readers and authors.
Reading groups
What is a reading group?
A group brings readers together around a book. Inside you'll find text-anchored discussion feeds, the book available to read, the member list, and thematic subgroups. Groups are created and curated by the BookGroup team. Groups can be public (visible in search) or private (by invitation only).
What are subgroups and when should I use them?
Subgroups are smaller communities created within a main group to deepen a specific debate — for example, a subgroup about the final chapter, or about one character's perspective. They can be created manually or from a text highlight.
How does language segmentation work?
Each language is a completely isolated instance in BookGroup. Books, groups, and contexts from one language do not mix with another — they are fully independent environments. There is no overlap of content, discussions, or data between different languages.
How do I manage members and permissions?
As owner or admin, you can invite members, approve join requests, remove participants, and delegate roles. The delegation system lets you distribute administrative responsibilities to assistants without losing overall control.
How do access requests work?
For public groups with manual approval, interested readers send a request. The owner (or delegated admin) approves or rejects each request individually on the group's requests page.
Book reader (EPUB Reader)
How does the integrated reader work?
The reader uses EpubJS to render EPUBs responsively. It offers two modes: paginated (book-like page-flipping) and continuous scroll. The floating header gives access to the table of contents (ToC), visual settings, in-book search, and exit button.
How do I make annotations and highlights?
Select any passage — a context menu appears with options to create a highlight, write a detailed annotation, or share directly to the group's feed. Each annotation is anchored to the exact passage that originated it.
What is anti-spoiler mode?
Anti-spoiler mode automatically hides other members' annotations and comments that refer to parts of the book you haven't read yet. You won't be impacted by revelations before you reach them.
What can I customize in the reader?
In the settings panel you can adjust: font type (serif or sans-serif), text size, visual theme (light, dark, sepia), and brightness. The reader saves your preferences for future sessions.
Is my reading progress saved?
Yes. BookGroup syncs your reading progress (position in the book) across sessions and devices — as long as you're authenticated. When you reopen the book, you continue from where you left off.
Discovery, search & library
How do I find books and groups on the platform?
Use global search to find books, groups, or other readers by name. You can also explore the public library (Library tab in the menu) with filters for language, genre, and availability.
What are personal tags?
Tags are categories you create to organize your library. Create tags like 'Read', 'Sci-Fi', 'For 2025', or any others that make sense to you. Then filter and browse books associated with each tag.
Can I view other readers' profiles?
Yes. Each user has a public profile where you can see the groups they're in and their public contributions. You can also follow or block other readers.
How does the platform feed work?
The social feed shows recent activity from your groups: new comments, shared highlights, new annotations and discussions — all in chronological order, without engagement algorithms.
Subscription plans (coming soon)
Does BookGroup have subscription plans?
Premium plans are planned for the next phase of the platform. When available, they will allow subscribers to create their own root groups, publish books, and set up paid-access groups.
What will the Premium plan include?
With a Premium plan you will be able to: create and manage root reading groups, publish books on the platform, configure paid access to groups, delegate admin roles, and use advanced community management tools.
How can I be notified when plans launch?
Contact us via the Contact page or by email at system@bookgroup.social to express interest. You will be notified as soon as plans become available.
Advanced features
What is the delegation system?
The delegation system lets group owners assign specific permissions to other members — like moderating discussions, approving access requests, managing the group's book, or customizing visual identity. Distribute responsibilities without losing overall control.
What is the Compliance Center?
The Compliance Center centralizes all platform legal documents — terms of use, privacy policy, anti-piracy policy — organized by language, country, and variant. It is accessible directly within the app and is centrally updated by the BookGroup team.
What is the Customization Center?
The area where you define the visual identity of your account and groups — colors, cover images, avatar, and other visual settings. Customization permissions can also be delegated to other members.
Does it work on multiple devices?
Yes. Your reading progress, annotations, and data are synced. For security and copyright compliance, reader access is restricted to one simultaneous session — signing into a new device ends the previous session.
Can I see my account's activity history?
Yes. For security and transparency, your account activity log is available on the platform — including logins, profile changes, and group actions.
Policies, copyright & support
How does BookGroup handle copyright?
BookGroup has an active anti-piracy policy. Content that violates copyright is removed. The platform maintains a Compliance Center with anti-piracy documentation, content removal policy, and compliance with local laws (LGPD, GDPR, and equivalents).
Where do I find legal documents (terms, privacy, etc.)?
All legal documents are available in this site's footer: Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, and Refund Policy. Inside the app, the Compliance Center centralizes and updates these documents by language and country.
How do I contact support?
Use the contact form on this site (Contact menu) or email system@bookgroup.social. Our team responds directly — no chatbots.
How do I request deletion of my data?
We fully comply with LGPD and GDPR. To request complete account and data deletion, visit the /delete-data page on this institutional site and follow the instructions.
